Faction Trip to Mt. Rogers

Last weekend, The Faction returned to Mt. Rogers, Va. to hopefully welcome a new member to The Faction, my daughter, Rose Oglesby. This was Roses' 3rd backpacking trip and her first to the "high mountains". We had a nice stay at a cabin on Wednesday night and then spent 3 days in the high country after that. Rose was introduced to the Appalachians in a big way as we saw off and on showers and a few thunder showers on Thursday and Friday. There were plenty of times with no rain so it didn't really put a crimp in our plans. The weather cleared on Saturday for a gorgeous day on Wilburn Ridge. It was also Roses' first time on the AT and she also got her first state high point in 5729 foot Mount Rogers. Rose did everything you could ask of a newbie and we are proud to call her a member of The Muir Faction. At some point I'm sure we will head south so Rose can meet the Highlander clan.

Rose starts off the festivities with some appetizers at the cabin. Of course
we would only expect that.

Bunyan provides a classic filet dinner. Awesome!!

Rose heads up Wilburn Ridge with its signature ponies in the background.
Rain clouds brewing in the distance.

Rest break on Wilburn with storm clouds on the horizon.
End of day 1 after a couple of hours of rain.

On the summit o' Rogers.

Leftover filet made for a classic cheeseboard.

Our party shelter. This is the same spot where President Dumplin set
up his tent last year.

Dad and daughter on Wilburn ridge. Bet you guys never got this close
to one of your initiates! Looking south into N.C. and Tenn.

Wilburn Ridge at its finest! Grandfather Mountain left center and the
Roan Highlands on the right.

You know these guys. Middle point of Wilburn Ridge in the distance.

Spectacular sunset from "The Rock With No Wind".

Rose did a great job with the Saturday night fire. A perfect end to
The Faction's 5th trip to Rogers.

Looking forward to seeing y'all at The Hang!!
